Business model 3.0

Smart Mobs: Designing Business for an Open World

I got inspired by this short essay which oulines in a clear and well-illustrated way, the key drivers behind the emergent, sustainable and successful business models of today's interconnected world.

It starts with a brief historical review of the evolution of business models from the so called "Detroit model" (pyramidal, hierarchial, leveraging vertical functional processes, based on process efficiency), to the "Hollywood model" (networked project, horizontal model, multiple outsourced expertise put together , central leadership strategy and brand). And today's "internet model" which builds on open platform, cooperation and shared resources.

Then it goes on with popular examples of successful "internet models" such as the open-source champions Firefox/Linux/Apache. Or the Telecom challenger Skype, or the growing wisdom built in Wikipedia.

The authors explain how the "internet model" builds upon 3 "key dynamics " :

  1. networks
  2. bottom-up, emergent systems
  3. cooperation

Networks are essential to enable the sourcing , finding, matching of talents, skills , expertise, ideas and passion . The networks are created through the multiple tools and collaboration platform that sprung out of the internet : IM, Social network software, video conferencing, blogging, podcasting, etc.

Emergent systems, prediction markets, smart mobs, the wisdom of crowds, recently formulated concepts based on real life success stories, to show us powerful ways to tap in the seemingly unfathomable intelligence of the collective. Like for example the very tangible value created out of rating system ( Ebay's powerseller rating, Amazon customer voting).

Cooperation in the sense of forming loosely bound team, pulling a bunch of interested parties together, sharing in risks, costs, time, resources and intelligence, to create or improve a common good or push out a big idea.

Cooperation by giving away IP or better say sharing and exposing IP, illustrated with the opening of matured platform such as the Amazon ecommerce API, Google maps API. And so many others: FlickR, Delicious, etc. which result in hundreds of Web 2.0 mash-ups. Open source development or the art of enlisting selfish interests to contribute to a common pool.

At Theandb, we are living the Internet Model, in and out. It is fascinating and quite uplifting to ride this wave. Sometime barely afloat but never out of passion, boosted by the pleasure of discovery. The way we build our partnership, the way we work remotely, the way we construct our own open-source product, weaved upon open libraries, the way we drive offshore development teams, the way we continuously invent our way into the future.

The way we proudly stand true to our motto: "consultant of compassion"

great day in the evolution of Theandb.biz

The 17th of October, 2006 marks as an important day in the history of our business.

We were awarded the status of Endorsed Supplier here in Australia under the Endorsed Supplier Arrangement (ESA). Once we'll find some spare time (difficult to find these days), we will of course give our site the badge of honour.

On that same day, we had two excellent meetings on creating partnerships that promise to bring in strong intellectual property and excellent growth potential for Theandb Pty. Ltd. More on these as we progress through them to a more final stage.

We also have our first corporate customer signed up for transLucid which is another piece of great news. There are concrete plans to merge our publishing-system with a serverless (=P2P) document sharing/ collaboration tool as well in the coming months.

As you can tell, many new developments that we hope will have a positive impact for our clients and users.

partnership with deciZium, smart dynamic travel packaging

We are very happy to announce a partnership with deciZium, a university spin-off created at the department of mathematics and operational research of Mons Polytechnic Faculty (www.fpms.ac.be) in Belgium in 2004. They have been developing their proprietary algorithm since 2002 that can create in 10 seconds what would take a person +10 hours.

Imagine going into your local travel office, only having in mind roughly your travel budget and the spot on the globe you want to travel to. Ten seconds afterwards you could go through the proposed travel itinerary and activities (all the attractions, hotels, transporation methods with prices and possibility to book) with them. Ten minutes later you would have a print-out of your dream travel, all pre-booked just for you.

A scenario only possible with deciZium and their product "YourTour".

In more detail:
This product could be seen as a "personal tour operator". Thanks to an advanced multi-criteria mathematical algorithm, it is possible to automatically create fully-customised trips, in a simple, quick and interactive way, in accordance with the tourist's preferences, wishes, and constraints. This unique technology processes 3-4 million tours in about 10-15 seconds to generate a customised travel programme, chronologically listing the attractions to visit and information related to them (including pricing & booking), the hotels to spend the night at and the travel time from one to the next destination.

The "YourTour" product is being marketed to tourist industry professionals (hotel chains, tour operators, tourist boards, etc.). It enables them to easily and rapidly propose fully customised travel packages (transportation, accommodation and attractions) to their customers or let them organise their trips on their own through an easy to use online application.

The online demonstration of "YourTour" is used in deciZium's marketing efforts to underscore the immediate availability of this solution and its ease of use. It integrates real data of attractions in Florida, USA and Belgium. It includes transportation modes not bound to a schedule (foot, car transportation) with support for schedule-bound transportation modes (plane, bus, train) in the works and expected to be completed in the next months (dated September, 2006).

Why language matters in user-interface design

A recent Nielsen/ NetRatings survey showed that "people are buying cutting-edge technology but often don't understand the terms that describe what their device actually does."

So even if many of "us" might believe that words such as RSS or VoIP are understood by everyone, that would be very narrow sighted indeed. What you can not miss is a good Copyeditor that helps translate your intentions for a system into language that users will comprehend. Otherwise, all your beautiful features will simply overload a users mind and they will not be useable.

launch of our easy to install & use publishing-system

Today, we launched transLucid version 1.5. Which is the reason why we have been more quiet than usual in the last couple of weeks!

It is a publishing system, geared in particular for users of knowledge-management desktop applications. Its strengths are the powerful importing & exporting functionality, easy install & editing that is similar to popular wiki systems (although easier to learn). Next to its usage as a collaboration-tool for small teams, it already powers several websites where it is used as a light-weight content-management-system.

We have been continuously releasing and integrating feedback from our growing user-base throughout the last couple of months. We feel it is ready for prime-time. Next on our list is to offer a hosted solution powered by transLucid and to offer it as a white-labeled product to ISPs, web-host providers, etc.

Many good reasons to install transLucid:

* No requirement for a MySQL database
* Content can be stored in a web rather than in a strict hierarchy
* Importing of PersonalBrain XML files into transLucid (download of PBExporter required), including all notes
* MindManager support coming up * Includes the choice between two graphical editors (TinyMCE & FCKeditor) * Easy and fast editing thanks to AJAX, functional layout and a robust backend
* Fully internationalized; choose a layout for each language (UTF8 support)
* RSS feeds for all transLucid pages so that your visitors can subscribe and stay informed
* Smarty template engine (widely adopted and open-source) allowing for complete flexibility in creating custom-layouts
* Websites that are powered by transLucid are completely searchable, configurable and XHTML 1.0 compliant

Seeing is believing, which is why the sandbox is now running the latest version. Edit at will under: http://www.pantha.net/sandbox/

We are looking forward to expand our customer base in the coming months. Feedback is crucial for our success. You may either direct it to us here on theandb.biz or visit our yahoo-group under http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/translucid/.
